Tear Gas is typically composed of two chemicals:
- AlphaChloroacetophenone (CN)
- Orthochlorobenzylidenemalonitrile (CS)
These chemicals are powders that are dispersed as an aerosol. After 30 minutes, the chemicals in the aerosol settle on surfaces. The chemicals are no longer in the air but the CN and CS residue on the surfaces can still cause tear gas symptoms, including:
- Sharp burning of the skin and mucous membranes
- Involuntary closure of eyes
- Profuse tearing
- Runny nose
